Your engagement session shouldn’t feel like a test of how good you are in front of the camera. It should feel like time together, with someone there to document it. Honestly, it’s also a great chance for you to get to know your photographer!
If you’re preparing for engagement photos in Minnesota, the Bay Area, or New York City, here are a few simple ways to make your session feel relaxed, personal, and authentically you.
The best engagement photo locations aren’t always the most popular ones.
Think about places that feel connected to your relationship: the neighborhood where you live, your favorite brewery, a park you explore together, downtown, Central Park, the Presidio, Golden Gate Park, or even your own home.
When the location feels comfortable, it’s easier to forget about the camera and focus on each other.
You don’t need to completely reinvent yourself for engagement photos.
Choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Coordinating colors usually photograph better than perfectly matching outfits, and bringing a second look can give your gallery some additional variety.
And..for you grooms…let your brides choose. 🙂
Most importantly, you should still recognize yourselves in the photographs.
Instead of thinking, “We have a photoshoot today,” think, “We’re going on a date—and our photographer is coming along.”
Grab a drink. Get coffee. Explore somewhere new. Bring your dog. Do something you genuinely enjoy together. Like…actually go on a date.
Movement, conversation, and laughter create opportunities for photographs that feel natural instead of overly posed.
One of the biggest concerns couples have before their engagement session is:
“We’re awkward in front of the camera.”
That’s okay. You don’t need to arrive knowing what to do.
I’ll give you direction when you need it, but we’ll also talk, laugh, move around, and create moments where you can simply interact with each other.
Your job isn’t to perform.
It’s to be together.
Before your engagement session, share what makes your relationship yours.
Tell me about your personalities, passions, inside jokes, favorite places, and even what makes you nervous about being photographed. The more I understand your story, the more intentionally we can create photographs that actually feel like you.
Preparing for your engagement session isn’t about becoming more photogenic.
It’s about creating the conditions where you can relax enough to forget about being photographed.
So wear something you love. Pick somewhere meaningful. Plan something fun. Then focus on the person standing next to you.
I’ll take care of the rest.
Moments over poses. Always.
