The Biggest Wedding Photography Myths (and Why They’re Wrong)

Wedding photography comes with a lot of assumptions: you need to know how to pose, you need a giant shot list, and every minute of the day needs to be perfectly planned.

The truth? Great wedding photography has a lot less to do with perfection—and a lot more to do with being present.

Here are a few of the biggest wedding photography myths we’d love to retire.

Myth #1: You Need to Know How to Pose

You don’t.

Most couples aren’t professional models, and we don’t expect you to be. You already know how to hug your favorite person, hold their hand, make them laugh, and be yourselves together.

Our job is to create the space for those moments to happen naturally.

Yes, we’ll give you direction when you need it. But we’re far more interested in connection than creating a photograph that feels overly staged.

Myth #2: You Need a Huge Shot List

A short list of important family combinations and meaningful details? Absolutely.

A spreadsheet containing every photograph you want us to take? Probably not.

When photographers spend the entire wedding checking boxes, they can miss the moments happening right in front of them—the look your partner gives you during the ceremony, your grandmother wiping away a tear, or your friends absolutely losing it on the dance floor.

Those moments weren’t on the list.

And they might become your favorite photographs.

Myth #3: More Posing Means Better Photos

Beautiful wedding photography doesn’t require turning your wedding into an all-day photoshoot.

We’ll create portraits. We’ll photograph the wedding party. We’ll get the family photos.

But then we want you to go experience your wedding.

Laugh. Cry. Hug people. Dance badly. Sneak away together for five minutes.

Your wedding photos should document a life being lived—not a performance being staged.

Myth #4: Everything Has to Go According to Plan

Let’s be honest. Something will go wrong.

Something will probably run late.

The weather might change.

Someone may forget something.

And that’s okay.

Some of the best wedding photographs happen when the plan disappears for a moment and something completely unexpected takes its place.

Your wedding doesn’t need to be perfect to be meaningful.

Myth #5: Wedding Photography Is Just About Pretty Pictures

This might be the biggest myth of all.

Your photographs aren’t just content for Instagram or images for an album.

They’re part of your family’s story.

Years from now, you’ll see people in those photographs who may no longer be sitting around your table. You’ll notice expressions and interactions you didn’t even realize happened.

That’s why we approach wedding photography as storytelling.

We’re not simply documenting what your wedding looked like.

We’re preserving how it felt.

Your Wedding Isn’t a Photoshoot

The goal isn’t to spend your wedding day worrying about whether you’re standing correctly or wondering where the photographer wants you next.

It’s to marry your person and experience everything that comes with it.

We’ll handle the photography.

You go live the story.

Moments over poses. Always.
